Awards and prizes won by MIA students
MIECO Designer’s Choice
Interior Design students Yee Jing Yong and Lim Kee Hong have won the first prize and second prize in the College Student Category respectively. The winners were selected from six finalists comprising four students from MIA and two students from UiTM.
1. MIA students and recent graduates have again won 7 prestigious prizes in the Piala Seri Endon Batik Design Competition 2007 in December 2007.
- Fashion category: first prize (RM30,000 and a trophy) won by Lucas Lim Boon Leong and Zoe Tan Been Ting. Desmond Liaw Kok Min and Koh Chean Peng won a consolation prize each.
- Soft Furnishing Category: Koh Chean Peng and the team of Pinping Liew, Koh Chean Peng, Hon Shu Wen & Woong Yur Haur won a consolation prize (RM1,000) each.
- Handicraft Category: Titing Limbos Ng won the second prize (RM10,000) and Yap Julia won the third prize (RM5,000) both are MIA graduates.
2. Blank Canvas Competition in conjunction with the launch of the all new Toyota Vios. The MIA team of young designers comprising students Mohd Mahfudz Abd Rashid and Mohd Zaki Nordin from Graphic Design, Estu Anatasia M. Hairuddin, Shah Izwan Sallehudin and Ismail AI Faroqi Jamal Mohd Nazar from Industrial Design, Izat Arif Saiful Bahri from Fine Art (supervised by En. Norhisham Seyajah. Co-ordinator, Industrial Design) has won the 2nd prize with a cash award of RM3000. The winning design based on Malay culture – the spirit of woodcarving was executed on a life size mock-up car (October 2007).
3. Asian Young Singers Jury Award. Ms Chin Yen Lin had won the 1st prize in Asian Young Singers Jury Award organized by Cristofori , Singapore in 2007.
4. Malaysian Music Festival - Music student, Mr Lawrence Loo Sim Ying (Sem. 3) won the second prize in the Malaysian Music Festival classical guitar category held at the Palace of the Golden Horses in September 2007.
5. Australian International Conservatorium
of Music Award.2 full scholarships and 3 half- scholarships were awarded to Music students by
the Australian International Conservatorium of Music, Sydney through competitive auditioning in July 2007.

6. 2007 International Student Design Workshop (Sozosha College of Design, Osaka):Gold prize won
by Tho Eng Fat from Diploma in Graphic Design, Silver prize won by Lim Zhi Chuan from Diploma
in Illustration and Bronze won by Ng Hang Lim
from Illustration and Lee Hui San from Graphic Design, all in group competition.
7. Tanjong Heritage 2007 Art Competition Fine Art student Woo Chin Wai won tthe 3rd prize in the Tanjong Heritage 2007 Art Competition organized by Tanjong Public Limited Company KL/Selangor.
8. Meico Designer’ Choice Award (Studen Category) 2007 2nd prize (RM2000) won by Interior Design student Ang Kwang Yean and 3rd prize (RM1000) won by Desmond Foo Tze Lik, also a Interior Design student.
1. Malaysian Central Region Singing Competition organized by Nantah Association 2006 Ms Cheng Xiao Teng, semester 6 music student won the 1st prize.
2. Royal College of Art, London Fashion student G.Ouddhena Eronigco has been selected to exhibit under the Theme “Lily Oncology on Canvas” on the 3rd Nov. 2006 .
3. Art Major Asian (AMA) 2006 Full Scholarship Awards (offered by the Korean National University of Arts). Awarded to Ms Low Hsin Yin (covers return airfares, tuition fees, board and lodging).
4. Tanjung Haritage 2006 competition
Yap Jun Hing a graphic design student won a consolation prize in pencil category.
5. SEBELAS 2006 Malaysian Society of
Interior Designers Interior Design Students
Tan Kuang Meng was awarded the 2nd prize in Exhibition Design Competition.

8. Choral Speaking Competition Awarded the 1st Prize to Wilyson Janto, Syazana Binti Ismail, Teoh Yin Chiea, Loshini Danappal, Sean Lim wai Sheong, Phang Soak Yee, Wong Pui Lin, Tan Lee Yin, Lim Fang Chin, & Martha Margaretha Lim (in-group).
9. College Placard Design Competition Awarded the 2nd Prize to Tam Tong Lim & Seah Sok Yee.
10. Malaysian International fashion Award (MIFA) 2006 Fashion Student Kaxt Chong Yip Seong emerged as 1 of 8 finalists.
11. Hong Kong International Youth and Children’s Festival on July 2006 Mr. James Long Cai Hunt, a graduating student had emerged as the best vocalist.
12. Hong Kong International Youth & Children’s Choir Festival held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre & Hong Kong City Hall The Malaysian Institute of Art’s Ladies Chorus comprising music students were awarded a silver ranking in the Contemporary Category in 2006.
13. South Malaysia Regional Singing Competition Ms. Chin Yen Lin, a Semester 5 student had won the first prize as well as 1st
runner-up for the solo vocalist category.
14. Midi 2006 International Competition :
Gold prize (USD6,000) won by Ng Shu Hui from Interior Design Department & consolation prize
won by
Chee Kok Lam from Industrial Design Department.
15. IIDA InteriCAD ID Award 2006: 1 st Prize RM1,500 and a set of interiCAD software won
by Kelly Leong Fong Yen.
16. 2006 International Students’ Workshop organized by Sozosha College of Design, Japan. Interior Design students Lee Jack Sun awarded a
1 st Prize & Lai Xiao Fan awarded a 3 rd Prize .

2. Textile & Fashion Design student Ms. Cheong Pooi Yoon won the Best Avant Garde Designer Award in the MIFA 2005 Upcoming Designer Category Competition.(rm5000+MIFA trophy+Vila Manja rm688 + Callas Cosmetic Kit rm3000+Prince Hotel Deluxe Exec Room for 2)
3. Two Art Major Asian (AMA) Scholarship Awards of the Korean National University of Arts 2005 have been won by Ching Kai Sieng from Graphic Design Department to pursue his BA degree in Multimedia and Shirley Wong from Fine Art Department to pursue her BA degree in Fine Art.
4. Intel Notebook Bag Design Competition: 1st prize (a Notebook) won by Mr. Tay Kian Khuan Industrial Design student, 2nd prize (RM2000) won by Mr.Tay Jing Fong Graphic Design student, 3rd prize (RM1000) won by Mr. Choy Kam Fatt Graphic Design student. Consolation prize (RM500 each) won by Mr. Sam Teng Jian Graphic Design student, Mr. Low Oon Giap Graphic Design student, Mr.Tan Wei Jian Industrial Design student, Mr.Lee Kek FengGraphic Design student, Mr.Tan boon Siong, Mr.Chiew Wee Shi Industrial Design student and Mr. Patrick Soh Kim Soon Industrial Design student.
5. Mr. Melvin Wong Chung Lim of Graphic Design Student (Sem.4) won the 1st prize in the Poster Design Competition “Reverse the Spread of Drugs & HIV / AIDS by 2015” organized by U.N.Country Team Malaysia and United Nations Association of Malaysia in October 2005.
6. Mr. Soh Kim Soon, an Industrial Design student won the First Prize (cash award RM2000 and a trip to Germany) and the Best Design Prize (cash award RM500) for Living Room Furniture Category in Malaysian Furniture Design Competition 2005 organised by Malaysia Furniture Entrepreneur Association (MFEA).
7. Ms. Soh Bee Teng, a student from the graduating class of Music in July 2005 was awarded 1st prize in the Songfest Singing competition organized by the Philharmonic of Selangor in June 2005 and the 1st prize in the 31st Central Malaysian Regional Singing Competition in KL on September 2005.
8. Ms Chin Yen Lin, A semester 3 student from the Department of Music had recently won the 1st prize in the ladies' section and the overall champion for the Malaysian Classical Song Singing Competition Grand Finals organized by the Tawau Hainan Association. The 1st prize carries a prize money of RM2000 and another RM1000 for the overall champion.
9. Mr Long Cai Hunt, a semester 6 music student was the second runner-up for the Men's Section at the Malaysian Classical Song Singing Competition Grand Finals organized by the Tawau Hainan.
10. Mr. Soh Kim Soon an Industrial Design student has won the First Prize (cash award RM2000) and the Best Design Prize (cash award RM500) for Living Room Furniture Category in Malaysian Furniture Design Competition 2005 organised by Malaysia Furniture Entrepreneur Association (MFEA) and a trip to Germany.
11. He also gained 2 nd placing in the Pilharmonic of Selangor’s Songfest Singing Competition in June 2005
12. Ms. Tan Ai Wen, a semester 6 music student won the 3 rd prize in the 31 st Central Malaysian Regional Singing Competition, KL.
13. Ms. Ng Kit Man, a semester 1 music student received the consolation prize in the National Gu Zheng Competition held on September 2005.
14. 2005 International Students’ Workshop at Sozosha College of Design
A team of seven students comprising four from Graphic Design Department and three from Interior Design students were selected to participate in the Sozosha College of Design Summer International Design Workshop in Osaka, Japan from 17 July 2005 to 3 rd August 2005. In the workshop, they had the opportunities to interact actively with participants from other countries and contributed their ideas in group work and project. It was a very enriching occasion for our students. Our students have also taken time out of their busy workshop to visit places of cultural and design interest in Osaka and Tokyo. 15. Ms. Tan Li Yin and Ms Wong Pui Lin were the winners of “The Creative Design Artwork Contest” organized by Goodrich Global (KL) Sdn. Bhd. They received a Gold Certificate and a cash award.
16. Clarey Khoo Teng Yu from Fine Art won the 1 st prize in Water Colour and a consolation prize winner in Oil/Acrylic in “The Tanjong Heritage 2005” Art Competition. Lam Kian Boon also won a consolation prize in Charcoal/Pencil in the same competition.
1. Fine Art student Yow Chee How won RM5,000 cash prize in the Nokia Award 2004 entitled “Upstart” competition organized by Nokia in December 2004. (result announced in 2005).
2. Textile and Fashion Design student Ng Saw Ting won the Grand Prize in the “Tomei Best Costume” competition and the 2 nd and 3 rd prizes were won by Ling Ching Yiew and Tan Boon Leong respectively in the same competition held in July 2005.
3. Industrial Design student Soh Kim Soon won the 3 rd prize (trophy & RM1000 cash) in the 2004 Malaysian Young Designer Award. (result announced in 2005).
4. Kiu Suk Sia, Ng Saw Ting, Chong Chai Yin and Nur Izzah bt. Abdul Rahman(Fashion&Textile students) were the consolation prize winners in Jarum Berlian 2005 competition organized by Utusan Melayu.
5. Interior Design studentsTham Pui Mun won the gold award (cash award Rm1500 plus a set of InteriCAD id worth RM8,850) in the InteriCAD id Award design compatition jointly organized by MSID, MFEA &JIDA in October 2005.
6. Interior Design student Ng Eng Kim was a honorary mention winner (cash award RM500 plus a set of PhotoImpact worth RM380) in the InteriCAD id Award design compatition jointly organized by MSID, MFEA &JIDA in October 2005.
7. Interior Design student Pua Pik Hwee won the 1 st prize from Intel Inter-College Digital Home Design Competition and walked away with RM5000 worth of a Pentium 4 extreme Edition chip supporting HyperThreading(HT) technology and a RM3000/- shopping voucher in December 2004.
8. A team of 3 students from Interior, Graphic and Textile & Fashion Design has won the 2 nd prize (RM10,000) in Batik Design Competition last month.

Singing Competition held in August 2004 and was also selected as the finalist for the
Nationwide Art Song Singing Competition to be held in December, 2004.
16. Music student, Long Cai Hunt was the 1st prize-winner of the South Regional Art Song Singing Competition held in Septmeber 2004 and the finalist for the National Art Song Singing Competition to be held in December, 2004.
17. Fine Art student Khairuzikri bin Mohamad Shahid (Se.5) won the first prize (oil/acrylic) in the Tanjong Heritage 2004-KL Art Competition organized by Tanjong Public Limited Company. Foong Sook Yee (Sem.5) won the 2nd prize in charcoal/ pencil/ink category , Yow Chee Hoe (Sem6) and Oon Wan Chen (Sem.5) won the 2nd and 3rd prize respectively in oil/acrlic category. Yow Chee Hoe (Sem.6) won consolation prize (charcoal/ink) and Mah Kah Kiet (Sem.4) consolation prize (print making) in the same competition.
18. Illustration student Gan Kah Yee (Sem.6) was the 3rd prize winner in category D,
“A Corporate Citizen In Action” with RM1000/- cash prize and Hong Chze Keong (Sem.6) won the consolation prize in the same category in the Public Bank Art Competition 2004.
19. Illustration student Goay Ting Ling (Sem.6) won the 3rd prize with RM1,000 in cash in The Public Bank Art Competition 2004 ‘The Art of Public Bank’ in Category A “The Banking Scenes”. Lam Wai Kheng (Sem.5) won RM500/- as consolation prize in the same category. RM500 each won as consolation prize by Chung Jian An and Wong Soon Yee (Sem.6) in category B “Images of Customers”.
20. A Graphic Design student Khaw Zhen Wei (Sem.5) won consolation prize in The Public Bank Art Competition 2004 ‘The Art of Public Bank’ in Category B, “Images of Customers”.
21. Fine Art students Khairuzikri Mohamad Shahid (Sem.5), Oon Wan Chen (Sem.5), Wong Shirley (Sem.5) and Lye Chi Kuang (Sem.4) were the consolation prize winners in The Public Bank Art Competition 2004 ‘The Art of Public Bank’ in Category B, C and E.
22. Textile and Fashion Design students Pua Poey Jin and Foo Ser Yeong (Sem.6) won
consolation prizes in Matex Fashion Competition organized by Malaysian Textile Manufacturers Association on 5th August 2004 at Istana Hotel.
23. Final year Textile and Fashion Design students Mahathir bin Masri and Yap Julia (Sem.6) were the consolation prize winners in the “Star Designer Award 2004” organized by the Star Publications (Malaysia) Berhad on 25th April 2004 at Mid Valley Shopping complex.
24. Interior Design students (Sem.4) were the 2nd prize-winners (in group presentation)
in Saturday Nine “9” 2004 organised by MSID in August 2004.
25. Interior Design Sem.5 students Andrew Lee Wenn Yaw, Liew Yung Keong, Eow Hooi Hoon and Chang See Lian jointly won the 2nd prize in “Young Interior Designer Award 2004” organized by Trans Info/Living Taste in conjunction with Homex Exhibition held from 11 – 14 September 2004.
26. See Phei Khee, Fenny Sandany and Teo Jen Hui from Sem.6 Interior Design won the 2nd, 4th and 5th prizes respectively in Young Interior Designer Award 2004 under “New Designer category” organized by Trans Info/Living Taste in conjunction with Homex Exhibition held from 11 – 14 September 2004.
